The first formal edition of the collected works of Montano as rearranged by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi from the four suites first published by Giovanni Battista Soria in 1624 (books I, II), 1625 (book IV), and 1626 or 1628 (book V), and a fifth collection first published by Calisto Ferrante in 1638 (book III). The part titles read as follows: [I] Architettura con diversi ornamentii cavati dall'antico da Gio. Battista Montano Milanese libro primo. ...; [II] Libro seco[n]do scielta. d. varii tempietti antichi ... D M Gio. Batt[ist]a Montano ... date in luce per Gio. Batt[ist]a Soria. ...; [III] Raccolta, de templii, e sepolchri disegnati dall'antico da Gio: Battista Montano ... libro terzo; [IV] Diversi ornamenti capricciosi per depositi o altari ... inuentati da Giovanbatista Montano ... libro qvarto. ...; [V] Tabernacoli diversi nouamente inuentati da M. Giovanbatista Montano ... Dati in luce da Giovanbatista Soria ... libro quinto. .... The final plate [42] in book I is unnumbered, pl. XXXXVIIII in book III is bound upside down; pl. [1] in book IV is unnumbered. A new impression of the five parts was issued by de' Rossi in 1691 when the privilege was granted, with the general title-plate altered to add a further line to the imprint '... con Priuilegio del Sommo Pontefice concesso L'Anno 1691' and the privilege line added to the part titles. Also in the Soane Museum are three vellum-bound volumes containing the largest surviving collection of finished ink and wash drawings from which some of the plates were made, purchased at the Adam sale in 1818 (q.v.). Copy Notes Bought from W. Boone for £1. 6s. 0d. on 13 February 1822, lot 204. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.8). Inscribed in ink on the general title-plate Revd Sir John Thoroton. Thoroton, Chaplain to the 5th Duke of Rutland, worked with Wyatt on the remodelling of Belvoir Castle in 1801; and following the fire in the picture galleries in 1813, he was charged with the rebuilding work.
