The half-title verso reads: Se vend à Paris, chez les auteurs, au Louvre, P. Didot l'ainé, imprimeur, ... et les principaux libraires. This successful work, based on drawings made in Rome by Percier, Fontaine and Charles Louis Bernier between 1786 and 1792, was issued in 12 parts. The plates are numbered 1--39, 39 bis (bound after pl. 43), 40--75, with one unnumbered plate bound between 57 and 58 in the Soane copy; pl. 20 serves as the frontispiece. The plate referred to as 'XL bis' in the 'Table Des Planches' is in fact the lower image on pl. 40. BAL, Early printed books, no. 2485.

Copy Notes Soane bought the 12th part from Josiah Taylor for 15s. on 22 February 1815 (Archive 16/12/69), thereby completing his copy of the book. A few months earlier, on 3 November 1814, he had bought a complete copy from Taylor for £8. 8s. 0d. less 17s. discount (Archive 7A/15/30), which he returned on 14 November (Archive 16/12/69).

Binding C19th half russia, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt- and blind-tooled spine, matching marbled-paper boards and endpapers.
