Following the fall of a piece of the vault of the tower of Sherborne Abbey Church, Dorset in January 1828, Edward Thomas Percy, an architect and surveyor working in Sherborne, was asked to report on the state of the church and to suggest remedies for its repair. This he duly delivered on 8 April, and on 21 April the committee resolved to print an abridgement and to seek the advice of another architect as well (Resolutions of the vestry ... and extracts from the report of Mr. E.T. Percy, 1828, q.v.). Percy, desperate for support, looked to Soane (as a fellow freemason) whom he had never met and on 7 May sent him a copy of the full report (Soane Case 144/6) along with two plates by Buckler for his opinion. It took Soane almost a month to reply. Meanwhile on 30 May Soane was officially requested by the vicar of the church, Rev. Lyon, to undertake a survey of the church, which he declined owing to the pressure of work. William Wilkins was then asked to make a report which was completed on 20 September and printed; on 19 December Percy again begged for Soane's support, enclosing copies of both reports. On 2 January 1829 the church committee decided in favour of Percy's report and ordered him to proceed. (Priv. Corr. X.G.1.2--10,12 and letter inserted at fol. 10 of Soane Case 144/6).

Copy Notes Sent to Soane by Edward Thomas Percy on 19 December 1828 (see general notes above). Some passages in Wilkins's printed report were underlined by Soane in pencil and there is a copy of a letter dated 27 December 1828 from Soane to Percy in reply to his letter of 19 December (earlier draft at Priv. Corr. X.G.1.8) loosely inserted.
