Edward William Brayley (1802--1870), was not a topographer like his father, Edward Wedlake Brayley, but rather a writer on science. The Soane copy has a printed slip tipped onto the front free-endpaper directing the binder to divide the descriptions and plates equally between the two volumes according to the order given in the 'Contents', or at the subscriber's discretion.
Copy Notes A large paper, uncut copy with proof plates; bought from Priestley & Weale for £9 12s. on 24 May 1826. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.6.9).
Binding C19th half green straight-grain morocco, dark grey paper boards, printed paper labels reading: 'Ancient Castles of England and Wales. Vol. I. With 48 highly-finished Engravings. By W. Woolnoth. With occasional Plans. Proofs £3.12s.' Volume II the same with the price altered in ink to £3.14.
