ACADÉMIE D'ARCHITECTURE (Paris)
[Grands prix d'architecture. Tome 1]
[6] p., [121] pl. ; 55.0 cm. (2°)

Originally issued between August 1787 and April 1796 in 20 cahiers, each containing six (seven in cahier 18) outline etched plates. Most of the plates were etched by Amant-Parfait Prieur. The original drawings for this and subsequent collections of Grands Prix are at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Continued in 1806 as Projets d'architecture et autres productions de cet art, 1806 (q.v.). A complete but reduced facsimile of the present collection with notes and catalogue entries was published by Helen Rosenau in Architectural History: journal of the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain, III (1960), pp. 15--180. BAL Early printed books, no. 2.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the title-leaf, the approbation and agreement ([4] pp.), the final 'Table' ([2] pp.), and all but the first seven cahiers (i.e., 42 plates). These appear to be bound according to their original order of publication, to judge from the stab-holes of an earlier sewing in parts. The plates are unsigned, unnumbered, uncoloured and without cahier numbers. The 42 plates in this copy, and possibly the 48 in the similarly bound later series (q.v., copy 2), were acquired in sheets from Mr West for £2 5s. on 23 February 1803. (SNB 53). Inscribed in pencil on pl. [1] 7 Livraisons £2-2-2; verso of pl. [30] inscribed in pencil 7 books/ 7books/ 2.2.

Binding Late C18th or early C19th brown paper boards, with a paper spine-label lettered in ink 'Grands Prixes D'Architecture' .

Reference Number 4327
