Smollett's Complete history of England first appeared in four volumes in 1757--58, with a five-volume Continuation being issued 1760--65. The part from 1688 was revised and republished as a continuation of David Hume's History, going through several editions in this form.

Copy Notes First volume bought from James Wallis for 19s. 6d., 4 May 1805 (Archives 7/3/89); second volume bought from James Wallis for 19s. 6d., 29 March 1805 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.8); volumes five and six bought from R. Scholey for 19s. 6d., 17 February (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.8) and 17 March 1806 (Journal 5). Bound uniform as vols XI--XVI in a set with the companion edition of Hume's History of England, 1803 (q.v.), which was also purchased from Wallis.

Binding Later C19th half calf, blind roll-tooled borders, gilt roll-tooled spines, green and red morocco spine-labels, brown ribbed-morocco grained cloth boards.
