London (Place), printed for the author, and sold by J. Isted,, 1737.
viii, 194, 142 p. ; 18.9 cm. (8º)

Anonymous; sometimes attributed to a Dr. Bekkers or more recently to the surgeon John Marten (fl. 1692--1737), but the author has not been identified. Now known to have been first published in 1716, and later considerably expanded over twenty further editions, the text is largely a compilation of ideas found in earlier works, but was profoundly influential in disseminating the notion of masturbation as sinful and the cause of a wide range of diseases well into the nineteenth century. (See Michael Stolberg, 'Self-pollution, moral reform, and the venereal trade: notes on the sources and historical context of Onania (1716)', Journal of the History of Sexuality, vol. 9, no. 1/2, 2000, pp. 37-61.) In later editions a growing number of letters and testimonials are accompanied by advertisements for consultations or treatments; the Supplement was first printed in 1725 'to be bound up with either the 7th, 8th, 9th, or 10th, editions ...'. In this edition, the supplement has its own title-page, register and pagination, apart from pp. [1]--14 which are part of sig. O belonging to the main text. ESTC t55929.
