Drop-head title. Signed '1st July, 1818. ... Joseph Stevenson, Secretary' at end. The history of what was later to become the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, formally opened in 1814, dates from an application to the Marquis of Donegall in 1807 and a meeting held on August 1st, 1807 to draw up plans for the regulation of the new Institution. John Soane was invited to draw up plans for the building in 1809 for which he declined payment and the foundation stone for a modified version of his plans was laid in 1810. (See D. The Soane Museum has 43 drawings relating to this project (Drawer 71/5/1--41 & 43; Vol. 90/5); for the correspondence relating to it, see Priv. Corr. V.F.1--37.
