Originally published 1715--35, and corrected by the author in 1747. This edition is illustrated by 100 etchings by J.J. Hubert after Bornet and Charpentier. Volumes I, II and II with final blank leaf. Soane must have been very fond of Le Sage's picaresque novel, as there are copies (some partial) of ten different editions in his Library, in French, English and Italian (qq.v.); the earliest is the London French-language edition of 1749 (q.v.). The book is mentioned in George Wightwick's description of his time as Soane's amanuensis in 1826--27; see A.T. Bolton, The portrait of Sir John Soane, London 1927, episode 35 (especially pp. 398, 404--5).

Binding Early C19th russia, gilt-tooled borders, gilt-tooled and gilt-lettered spines, green marbled edges to match the endpapers.

Additional Names Bornet, Claude (1733--1804); Charpentier, François Philippe (1734--1817); Hubert, Jean-Jacques
