John Laurens Bicknell was Soane's solicitor, and became a Life Trustee of the Museum after Soane's death. In Soane's last Will he was left a legacy of £20 for a ring. He had proposed dedicating an edition of the works of Josephus to Soane in 1826, but no such edition is now in the Library. (Bolton, Portrait, pp. 449-50).
Copy Notes Title-page inscribed in ink after 'F.A.S.' F.R.S., and the date corrected to read 1826. Inscribed in ink on final front free-endpaper John Soane Esq. / With the author's sincere respects- / JB. Folded ALs from the author dated 34 Sackville St. - Sept. 29- / 1826 tipped in before the title-page: Dear Sir / I am happy to hear you are finding benefit / from your excursions, and that your health / has been improving - ... / Perhaps the / enclosed, of which I request your acceptance / may give you an hours amusement ....
Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine, black leather spine-label. Probably the copy of 'Bicknell' bound by Edwin Hutchinson, 28 February 1832, for 1s. 6d. (Archives 7/16/29).
