First edition 1822. A second volume was published separately in 1827, but is not in the Soane Museum. Charles Butler was one of the first Roman Catholics to be appointed a barrister after the lifting of Catholic disabilities in 1791, and a proponent of Catholic emancipation.

Copy Notes Bound (2) as issued with a prospectus for the Works of William Beveridge, 1822 (q.v.) and the publisher's catalogue for April 1822 (q.v.). Bought from Ogle, Duncan & Co., through Mr Moyes, for 7s. 3d., 16 April 1823. (Spiers Box. Miscellaneous booksellers).

Binding C19th publisher's original blue paper boards, brown paper spine with price '9s. 6d.', printed paper spine-label. Rear pastedown embossed with small stamp 'Bean', possibly the bookbinder John Bean (fl. 1822--1836).
