Anonymous. By Thomas Mathias. A satire on contemporary authors, taking the form of dialogues in verse with extensive learned annotations, which enjoyed topical favour and derision over sixteen editions. First published in four parts, the first of which was first published in 1794, the second and third in 1796, and the fourth in 1797. This 'New Edition' is a reissue of parts 1--3 in the 'Fourth Edition Revised' (ESTC t221793, t221794, n20476, all lacking the half-titles in the Soane copy) and part 4 in the 'Second Edition' (ESTC t2320), preceded by a general title-page and a half-title reading 'The Pursuits Of Literature. Complete In Four Parts. [Price Eight Shillings And Six-Pence In Boards.]'. N.b. The University of Toronto copy has parts 1--3 in the third edition revised. ESTC n72155.
Copy Notes The Soane copy as described above lacks the half-titles to the first three parts. Illegible inscription in ink on the half-title of the fourth part, cropped at the head of the page. Presumably the copy bought from Edward Lawrence, 8vo bds, in 1802. (Spiers Box. Miscellaneous Booksellers). Bound (1) with Mathias's A translation of the passages ... quoted in ... the Pursuits of literature, 1798 (q.v.).
Binding Early C19th tree calf, gilt-tooled spine with diapered compartments between Greek key rolls, black morocco spine-label. Bound by Edward Lawrence for 2s. 6d. in 1802. (Spiers Box. Binding).
