'In the present edition the text of Malone has been followed, as published under the superintendence of Mr. Boswell in the year 1821, ...' -- page l. This was Malone's second edition of Shakespeare (q.v.), the first having been published in 1790. Boydell's handsomely illustrated edition was published in 1802 (q.v.). Includes 'Life of Shakspeare', Dr. Johnson's preface to his edition of Shakespeare, 1765, and an 'Index to the striking passages and beauties'. Most volumes include advertisements bound in or loosely inserted for this and other editions by Valpy.

Copy Notes Mostly unopened. Volume I with ALs in ink attached to the front free-endpaper from the editor, A.J. Valpy dated 18 Oct / 1832 to Dear Sir John / I have sent you the first Vol. of Shakspeare / as you wished to favor / my enterprise & to take / the work - pray look at / p. XXXV. of the Life, which / I think will meet with / yr exprest idea, as well / as my own - / Yrs truly / A.J. Valpy. Volume VIII with a loosely inserted small envelope addressed in ink to Mr Seaman. Payments to Mr Valpy recorded as follows: for vols 7 to 15, + another, vol. 4 for £2 10s. (Cheque stubs (Praed & Co.) 1833/4 (6/14)); 1-6 numbers, for £1 10s., April 1833, 7 to 15, £2 5s.; another copy, vol. 4, 5s., 4 January 1834. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.30,31). A draft of a note from Soane to Valpy dated 4 January 1834 requests another / Copy of Vol: 4 of an unnamed work clearly to be identified with this purchase, the former one having / been stolen from him. (Priv. Corr. XVI.F.123).

Binding Cased, publisher's C19th dark blue moiré cloth, gilt-stamped spines reading 'Shakspeare With Illustrations I (--XV)'.
