First edition. A utilitarian critique of Shaftesbury's Characteristicks of men, manners, opinions, times, first published in 1711. A leaf signed *T and numbered [271] - [272] is inserted between pp. 272 and 273 (leaves S8 and T1), apparently completing the text, although the catchword on p. [272] is incorrect. Engraved title-page vignette. ESTC t110665.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Bought from Thomas Boone for 2s., 24 December 1805 (paid 25 December 1806). (Spiers Box). Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper with Boone's price and bookseller's codes.
Copy 2: 20.0 cm. Inscribed in pencil on front free-endpaper 2/6 with some page references to Voltaire on religion.

Binding Copy 1: C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled borders and spine, brown morocco spine-label reading 'Brown / agst / Shaftesbu'.
