First published anonymously in 1791 by the evangelical preacher, Richard Cecil, and reissued in numerous editions.

Copy Notes One of the two editions in Soane's library (the other being an undated duodecimo 'New Edition', q.v.) is thought to have been sent to him on the occasion of Mrs Soane's death by Lady Liverpool, the youngest daughter of Soane's early patron the Bishop of Derry, with a letter dated 30 November [1815]. See Bolton, Portrait, p. 208 and Clare Gittings, 'Consolation and Condolence on the Death of Mrs Soane' in Soane and Death, ed. Giles Waterfield, exh. cat., Dulwich Picture Gallery, 1996, p. 46. This copy inscribed on front free-endpaper with the price 4.6 and also 1866--96, the dates specified by Soane for the opening of receptacles sealed according to his instructions.

Binding C19th dark brown calf, gilt double-ruled spine, gilt-lettered.
