First edition published 1774. This work, written by the physician John Gregory after the death of his wife, was published posthumously by his son to immediate acclaim, and went through many editions. Two other works by the author are advertised on the half-title verso. ESTC t129456.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper Eliza Soane / Aug.st 21. 1784 - her wedding day. Bookseller's code and price 3s in pencil on rear free-endpaper. There is evidence in Soane's archives for the purchase of two further copies of Gregory's Legacy (editions unspecified), presumably as gifts, as only one copy is now in Soane's library: one bound in 'calf extra' from James Moyes for 10s. 6d. on 28 May 1822 (Spiers Box, Purchases through personal friends), and another '18mo Calf extra' from T. & W. Boone for 11s. on 12 January 1831 (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.7.15).
