First edition. A second volume was first published in 1794. Beilby Porteus was appointed Bishop of Chester in 1777 and later Bishop of London in 1787, and was a campaigner against the trade of enslaved people. ESTC t86342.
Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on title-page Eliza: Soane. / Febry 6. 1786; with a single ink annotation on page [1]. Bought for 4s. on 6 February 1786. (Journal 1781--97. p. 68). Bound as a mixed set with the fourth edition of the second volume, 1799 (q.v.).
Binding Early C19th tree calf, gilt-ruled spine, red morocco spine-label. The two volumes bound by Edward Lawrence for 4s. 6d. in 1802. (Spiers Box. Miscellaneous Booksellers).
