Leaf A1 is blank except for the signature below (printer's?) device of sun on shield with motto 'Sol Et Scutum Deus Est Nobis', which appears on some copies of other works printed by William Bentley circa 1650 (cf. ESTC r208978; ESTC t27565) as well as on Alford's companion work The church triumphant, 1649 (q.v.). The imprint of the Soane copy is partially scored through in ink, obscuring John Williams's address 'at the Crown in St Pauls Church-yard'. ESTC r22399; Wing A921.

Binding C17th black morocco, gilt-panelled covers with concentric gilt-ruled frames joined at the corners and small tools, gilt-tooled spine direct-lettered 'The / Churc / Trium / Phant', gilt edges, marbled endpapers.
