Title-page for the second volume reads ' ... Volume The Second. The Seventh Edition. ..., 1781'. Hugh Blair's hugely popular sermons were first published in one volume octavo in 1777, with three further editions appearing in the same year. 'Volume The Second' first published in 1780; three further volumes appeared in 1790, 1794 and (posthumously) in 1801. Page [459] of vol. II advertises the eleventh edition of vol. I; this is followed by [5] pages of 'Books ... lately published by T. Cadell ...'. The author, a Church of Scotland minister, was an active figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and professor of rhetoric at the University of Edinburgh whose Lectures (1783, q.v.) set a new standard in the study of rhetoric and literary criticism.
