John Deschamps took the name Chamier under the terms of the will of his maternal uncle Anthony Chamier, M.P. (1725--1780). He was the father of Frederic Chamier, R.N., who married Soane's granddaughter Elizabeth, a marriage that Soane attempted to oppose. Soane was apparently dubious about Captain Chamier's assets; it may be that John Chamier's reputation in the East India service (and scandalous stories spread by Chamier's opponents) contributed to Soane's disapproval of the match. Chamier's library, as evidenced by this catalogue, comprised substantial amounts of contemporary pornography and was sold some years prior to its owner's death.
