Richard Heber, the great bibliomaniac, died in 1833 and the disposal of his library extended over thirteen sales in London between 1834 and 1837, conducted variously by Messrs. Sotheby (parts 1--3, 9--10), Evans (parts 4, 6--8, 11) and Wheatley (parts 5, 12--13), and further sales on the continent. See W.Y. Fletcher, English book collectors, 1902, pp. 336--41; Arnold Hunt, 'The sale of Richard Heber's library, 1834--1837' in R. Myers, M. Harris & G. Mandelbrote (eds), Under the hammer: book auctions since the seventeenth century, 2001, pp. 143--172. Parts 5--8 and 11--12 only are in the Soane Museum (qq.v.).
