The Society of Painters in Water Colours (known as the Old Water Colour Society) was established in 1804. In 1808 the name was changed to 'The Associated Artists in Water Colours'. Four years later, the society folded under financial pressures. A second 'New Society of Painters in Water Colours' was established in 1831 whose name was then changed in 1833 to 'The Associated Painters in Water Colours'.
