Copy Notes Marked up in ink with prices (and in pencil with the 'asked price' in some instances). Inscribed in pencil on title-page The classical objects were the property of his father Dr North, Bishop of Winchester. The total amount of Soane's expenditure is tabulated on the final page at the sum of £75=18=6 for six lots. (Spiers Box - 'Papers connected with the purchase of Pictures, Books, Objects of Art, etc.'). Loosely inserted is an ALs from James Adams, who, residing in Portsmouth at the time, had acted as Soane's agent in making purchases at the sale at Alverstoke in 1825. (See Priv. Corr. XVI.F.37--40). Writing from Store Street, 16th Decr: 1835, he informs Sir John / It gives me much pleasure / to enclose the catalogue for which you / enquired. I regret, however, to perceive, on turning it over, that the information conveyed by it is so exceedingly scanty - / with respect, however, to the classical articles / of virtue, Dr North, a short time previous to his death, told me that they were // collected by his late father (the Bishop of Winchester) / during a residence in Italy - Although / I noted the prices at which several of the / lots were sold, those only, which are marked with a star, are the articles which / I had the pleasure of purchasing for / yourself ... .
