The objects of the Society, founded in 1821 by the flamboyant medical entrepreneur John Frost (1803–1840), were to investigate 'by means of Communications, Lectures, and Experiments, the Medicinal properties, Botanical characters, and Chemical constituents of Plants ...' (p. [1]). Soane was sent a prospectus of the Society (q.v.) with an invitation to join in July 1827 and received his certificate of membership dated 9th November 1827 in due course. (Rpiv. Corr. V.D.6.2)

Binding Later C19th red pebble-grained binder's cloth, gilt-lettered spine reading 'Societies'. Later numbered 'E' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
