A collection of the principal squibs issued during the present election. With the threatening letter that was sent to Sir M.M. Sykes.

An anonymous collection. The York election of 1818 was hotly contested. A similar publication is recorded: The spirit of the times! Or, The contested election for the City of York, in the year 1818: containing an impartial and correct collection of the speeches and addresses of the candidates ... on their nomination; and addresses at the conclusion of the poll: together with the party squibs ... Collected and published by Caesar Peacock, York, [1818]. Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771--1823), one of the sitting candidates, was a Yorkshire landowner at Sledmere and magistrate, and was famous as an agriculturalist, a collector of paintings and fine books, and in the promotion of the Doncaster races. Soane acquired copies of the catalogues of the sale of Sykes's library by Robert Evans on 11--23 May (q.v.), 28 May--9 June (q.v.) and 21--28 June 1824 (q.v.), and of his works of art by James Christie the younger on 14--15 May of the same year (q.v.).

Copy Notes Bound (5) in a collection of political and satirical tracts.

Binding C19th calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, gilt double-ruled spine, red spine-labels, gilt-lettered 'Political Pamphlets'. Numbered '75' in a series of pamphlet volumes.
