HOLBACH, Paul Henri Thiry, baron d' (1723--1789)
[Histoire critique de Jésus-Christ, ou analyse raisonnée des Évangiles. English. 1813]
Ecce homo! or a critical inquiry into the history of Jesus Christ, being a rational analysis of the Gospels. Translated from the French.
London (Place), D.I. Eaton,, 1813.
344 p. ; 20.6 cm. (8º)

Anonymous. By Paul Heinrich Dietrich von Holbach, one of the Encyclopédists, but attributed in the translator's 'advertisement' in the first 12º edition of 1799 to M. Boulanger. Translated by George Houston. The French original first published in 1770.

Copy Notes Imperfect; the introduction and chapters I--V only. Wanting all before p. [1], and after p. 96. The juxtaposition of this work in the collection with the Address of D.I. Eaton, [1812] (q.v.) and the octavo format suggest that it is from the second edition of Houston's translation published by Eaton in 1813 while in prison rather than from the first. Bound (5) in a volume of tracts on religious subjects.

Binding Later C19th half calf, blind double-ruled borders, brown morocco-grained binder's cloth boards, blind-ruled and gilt-dotted spine, black spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Pamphlets Theology. 1656. 1792.'. Numbered '78' in a series of pamphlet volumes.

Reference Number 5518
