Translation of Recherches philosophiques sur les Égyptiens et les Chinois; the original French text was first published in 1773. Pauw, better known for his Recherches philosophiques sur les Américains, 1770, was also a phyisognomist. ESTC t95857.

Vol. I: Page references in ink in Soane's hand on rear free-endpaper; folded leaf of notes and references in ink inserted (pp. 118--9); vol. II: page references in ink on front pastedown; references and page notes in ink on rear free-endpaper.

Binding Original C18th blue paper boards, red paper spine labels inscribed in ink 'De Pauw: / Egyptians / Chinese'.
