Strange was an engraver known for his reproductions of European painting, who fell into disfavour with the Earl of Bute after turning down a poorly recompensed commission to engrave his portrait in 1758.
Copy Notes Prices marked in ink. Tipped in at the front of Strange's A collection of historical prints, engraved from pictures by the most celebrated painters, [1792] (q.v.), i.e. lot 165, 'A Fine Set Of Sir Robert Strange's Works, half bound Russia' which was purchased by Soane for £31 10s. 0d. and is annotated in ink 50 Plates / 37 damaged; lot 166 is also annotatated 37 damaged / more but sold for the same price.
