Engraved title-plate. Issued in eight parts, each with the title printed on a blue wrapper and four plates. With a list of subscribers including Sir William Chambers. Gardnor was an annual exhibitor at the Free Society of Artists from 1763 to 1769, vicar of Battersea from 1778 until his death in 1808. The text includes 'Hints of Occurrences in the Tour'; this and the aquatints are based on a journey to Paris, Geneva, Lausanne, Basle, Strasburg, and back down the Rhine undertaken by Gardnor with his nephew Richard (later Major) Gardnor in 1787, during the civil war in the Netherlands. A quarto edition with the plates executed by Gardnor and his nephew was published in 1792. ESTC reports a pasted errata slip on p. 53 of the present edition, not present in the Soane copy. ESTC t149231.
