Engraved letter dated in ink 'Adelphi 10 June 1835' and signed 'Ar. Aikin Secy'. The engraved vignette is by H.C. Shenton after Thomas Stothard. According to the rough draft of a letter addressed by Soane to the Duke of Sussex as president of the Society of Arts, dated 26 May 1835 , Soane had permitted his annual contributions to lapse following an incident 'some years since' when he was barred from voting due to the accidental non-payment of his contributions, but now wished to become a life subscriber in order that the 'excellent' institution not suffer from the circumstance (Archives 7/E/1/15). Soane paid twenty guineas for life membership.

Copy Notes With an attached letter signed by Joseph Chater, Collector dated 10 June 1835, and by the receipt for Soane's payment of 20 guineas dated 23 May 1835.
