Drop-head title. Imprint from docket-title reading 'Surry Institution, 1819. Syllabus ...'. Hazlitt had delivered a course of lectures on the English poets in 1818; Soane and Hazlitt probably met at the last of these in February, and by April a friendship was established, with Hazlitt giving Soane a copy of the second edition of Characters of Shakespear's plays (q.v.) probably in June 1818. The 1819 series of lectures were published under the title Lectures chiefly on the dramatic literature of the age of Elizabeth, delivered at the Surry institution, Edinburgh: Bell and Bradfute, 1820.
