Surry Institution. May 20, 1822. Sir, I am directed by the Committee of Managers to inform you, that the annual general meeting of Proprietors, for the election of officers, and on other business, will be held at this place on Thursday, the 30th instant May, ... Knight Spencer, Secretary. ...

Half-sheet, verso blank. Drop-head title. Announces the resolution that in consequence of the exhausted state of the funds, the Institution would be closed on 25 March 1823. The financial predicament of the Surry Institution, founded in 1808, had become clear as early as 1813 when 'a sub-committee to take into consideration the best mode of placing the Institution upon a solid foundation' had begun to canvas the membership as to how best to proceed (q.v.); proposals issued in June 1822 (q.v.) for the formation of a New Surrey Institution (q.v.) came to nothing, and the institution was duly wound down.
Copy Notes Enclosing Report of the auditors, 1822 (q.v.), and Balloting list, 1822 (q.v.). Previously folded and sealed as an envelope addressed John Soane Esq / Lincolns Inn Fields with red and black postal marks, later inscribed in ink with docket-title in an office hand Surry Institution / 31 December 1821 / Report of the / Auditors.
