London (Place), printed by W. Nicol, Cleveland-row, St. James's,, [1828].
[4] p. ; 25.1 cm. (4º)

Drop-head title. Imprint from docket-title, which reads: 'The Annual Report Of The Directors Of The British Institution To The Governors. June 11, 1828.'. The report is signed by [Lord] Farnborough and six others. The British Institution was formed in 1805 to 'open a public exhibition for the sale of the productions of British artists, to excite the emulation and exertions of younger artists by premiums, and to endeavour to form a public gallery of the works of British artists, with a few select specimens of each of the great schools.' It held two exhibitions each year, one of the old masters, the other of contemporary art. The annual report for 1828 records the donation of £500 to the funds of the Institution by Soane, 'an Individual who has through a long life shewn himself an able and liberal Patron of the Arts.'

Copy Notes Enclosed with an ALs from Farnborough dated 28 June 1828, recording a visit to Mr. Jacksons [i.e. John Jackson, R.A.] to see what progress he had made on a portrait described as a very faithful likness and has caught the right air exactly ... & will I am satisfied be highly appreciated by the Members of the Institution. It is not clear whether this is a reference to the portrait of Soane in masonic costume painted by Jackson in 1828, now hanging in the Picture Room at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, or to another painting entirely. Two tickets to visit the gallery on Monday evening were also enclosed.
