Imprimatur on verso of front free-endpaper signed 'Selby', Clerk of the Peace. Promulgated in the light of the recent Act of August 1823, An Act for consolidating and amending the laws relating to the building, repairing, and regulating of certain gaols and houses of correction in England and Wales, (1823. 4 Geo.IV.64). The 'new prison in Clerkenwell', i.e. the Middlesex House of Detention was designed by Samuel Ware in 1816 and completed in 1818.
