Printed half-sheets. Three single issues only; issue number precedes title. Anonymous. By Joseph Addison, Sir Richard Steele and others. The first issue of The Spectator appeared on March 1, 1711, and the first series ran until December 6, 1712. Originally issued in 555 numbers, six times a week from 1 March 1711 to 6 December 1712, and revived from 18 June to 20 December 1714 (nos. 556--635, mainly by Addision, reprinted here as vol. VIII). The Spectator was much reprinted in collected editions (1767 ed., q.v.), and transformed British periodical writing, with hundreds of collected editions published over the next two centuries. ESTC p1724.
