First published in 1606, the French translation first published as Les cinq rangs de l'architecture, avec ... quelques belles ordonnances d'architecture, mises en perspective, inventées par J. Vredeman frison, et son fils, 1617. A second Amsterdam edition in French with the same title followed in 1620; the present work with a new title is the third Amsterdam edition of the French translation. Hondius was responsible for the descriptions and plates of the orders; the final [15] plates illustrate the perspective techniques of Vredeman de Vries. There are two plates AA in the Soane copy: the first is signed and dated 'P Vriese Inv 1606'; the second is a reverse copy of the first in outline only with no name or date. BAL, Early printed books, no. 1540.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting plates signed D1 (plate of Tuscan order), and DD. Bought by Soane from W. Boone for 9s. 6d., 13 February 1822 [lot 88]. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.8). This is corrected in pencil below: Only 23 added Plates/ 27 Architectural with the date (?) 16/3/70, followed by The same 21/8/05.
