The Architects' and Antiquaries' Club. J. Britton, F.S.A. Treas. and Hon. Sec.
London:, printed by order,, 1820.
15, [1] p. ; 18.5 cm. (8°)

The Architects' and Antiquaries' Club, of which Soane was not a member, was established on 7 December 1819 and appears to have been a splinter of the Architects' Club established in 1791 of which Soane was a member until around 1796 when he seems to have resigned. Its objects were to provide a forum for communication and the establishment of 'a national "Society Of Architects And Antiquaries;" an Institution equally necessary for the improvement of English Architecture, and for the dissemination of correct principles and opinions on every subject connected with this important branch of the Fine Arts' (pp. [3]--4).

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on page 15 All who know me, & think / well of me will withdraw / their names from this Club / after reading no. 3 of the Mag: of Fine Arts. The short-lived Magazine of Fine Arts (q.v.), of which only 6 monthly issues were published starting in May 1821, was edited by the treasurer and secretary of the Architects' and Antiquaries' Club, John Britton in collaboration with J. Corner. It was the review in no. 3, July 1821 of The Magazine of Fine Arts, repeating and agreeing with vicious attacks upon Soane published in The Guardian, 20 and 27 May and 3 June 1821, that deeply upset Soane and temporarily strained his friendship with Britton. He evidently expected members of the club, particularly Britton, to demonstrate their loyalty by resigning, and annoted his copy of Britton's Address read before the Society of Architects and Antiquaries of London, 1821 (q.v.) with sarcastic comments. See A.T. Bolton, The Portrait of John Soane, R.A. (London 1827), pp. 339--46.
