LIVERPOOL SOCIETY FOR PROMOTING THE STUDY OF ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING

Report of part of the resolutions adopted at a meeting of junior architects and engineers, held December 3, 1835, for the purpose of taking into consideration the propriety of establishing a society of young architects and engineers. T.B. Lewis, Esq., in the chair.

Drop-head title, verso and conjugate leaf blank. The report is signed by 'Jos. Boult, Secretary'. The Society subsequently dated its inauguration from 3 December, 1835 but probably did not survive long for when the Liverpool Architectural and Archaeological Society (later the Liverpool Architectural Society) was established in 1848, its Proceedings for 1848/9 commencing with a brief outline of its foundation and a Prospectus which states that 'no place has yet been found [in Liverpool] for a Society having ... for its object the cultivation of Architectural taste, and the encouragement of improvements in the science of construction'. Josiah Boult was one of the promoters of the Liverpool Architectural and Archaeological Society, and a member of its council.
Copy Notes Copy 1: Inserted in Soane copy 2. Previously folded, final verso addressed in ink to Sir John Soane / London. Accompanied by a letter from Joseph Boult dated 10 February 1836, inviting Soane to let his name go forward as an Honorary Member of the fledgling Society. A draft of Soane's reply dated 7 March accedes to the invitation and requests information on the Society's progress. (Priv. Corr. V.E.4.1 & 4).
Copy 2: 25.3 cm. Previously folded, final verso inscribed in ink March. 1836 / Liverpool Society for promoting the / Study of Architecture / and Engineering.
Binding Copy 1: Loose bifolium.
Copy 2: Folded paper attached to other items with C20th book tape.
