The Surry Institution for the Diffusion of Science, Literature, and the Arts was founded by subscription in 1807 following after the creation of the Royal Institution and the London Institution, opening its doors on the premises of the former Leverian Museum on Blackfriars Road refurbished by Joseph T. Parkinson in 1808. See F. Kurzer, 'A history of the Surrey Institution', Annals of Science, vol. 57:2 (2000), pp.109--141. At this date the library is reported as comprising 5084 volumes; recent donations of books are listed under the names of the donors.
