Proposals for publishing, by subscription, fifty copies (only) of a descriptive account of White-Knights, a seat of his grace the Duke of Marlborough. Written by Mrs. Hofland. And to be embellished with twenty-two engravings, from pictures and drawings by T.C. Hofland.

Folded half-sheet, verso and conjugate leaf blank. Barbara Hofland's A descriptive account of the mansion and gardens of White-Knights was published in 1819 and was 'illustrated with twenty-three engravings'. While the Duke of Marlborough was to retain one hundred copies for his 'private friends', T.C. Hofland was to enjoy the disposition of the remaining fifty copies 'on his own account'. Soane did not subscribe for a copy. See Dennis Butts, Mistress of our tears (Aldershot 1992), pp. 69--70, no.25.

Copy Notes Previously folded and sealed as a letter addressed in ink to J. Soane Esqr &c &c / Lincolns Inn fields, red and black postmarks.. Blank p. [3] used for an ALs in ink from T.C. Hofland dated Twickenham / Apr. 10th. 1819. This refers to his submission of pictures to the Royal Academy and requests the favour of Soane's assistance in their hanging, and also to the fact that the work announced in the annexed prospectus will be completed / in about two months time .... From a letter dated 13 June 1818 also in the Soane Museum archives it would appear that Hofland had previously enclosed the following prospectus of the work on that occasion. (Priv. Corr. III.H.9.43).
