Although this re-titled edition of Antichità Romane de' tempi della Repubblica, 1748 (the Soane issue of which, q.v., is dateable to 1753 or 4) retains the original engraved dedication to Giovanni Bottari, it is issued here much later as part of an edition of the Opere varie dateable to c. 1795. It was probably first re-published with this title by Francesco Piranesi soon after his father's death in 1778. It has the earlier title-plate altered to read as above and includes two new plates: Francesco's own 'Tempio di Minerva Medici' and the 'Arco di Aosta' etched by G.B. Piranesi after a drawing by Sir Roger Newdigate. In this copy the re-numbering of the plates described by Hind (p. 76) has not yet occurred.

Copy Notes Published as part of (and bound in) a copy of the Opere varie issued c. 1795. The ordering of the plates in this copy follows their original numbering rather than the revised sequence normally associated with this edition (for this see Hind, Piranesi, p. 76). With the 'Arco di Aosta' and 'Tempio di Minerva Medici' plates numbered in MS. ink 'Tav. 4' and '30' respectively. The numbering of the 'Parte del Foro di Nerva' as 'Tav. 1' is uncorrected.

Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spine, red spine label gilt-lettered 'Piranesi / Opere / Varie', gilt roll-tooled edges. Part of a 12-volume set re-bound by Hood and McCullock, to whom Soane paid £24 on 3 July 1826. (Archive 16/12/38).

Reference Number 6402

Additional Names Hood & McCullock; Piranesi, Francesco (1758--1810); Newdigate, Roger (1719--1806)
