Another edition, with a new unsigned and undated etched title-plate (probably not by Piranesi) and the addition of five new plates by Francesco Piranesi (viz. pl. [4], [5], [7], [8] & [9]). Issued here as part of a copy of the Opere varie (q.v.) dating from c. 1795, this posthumous expanded edition probably first appeared in 1780 (the date assigned to it in the 1792 catalogue of Piranesi's works - see Hind, p. 83). Its rather carelessly etched title-plate with reversed 'N's and 'Z's also occurs in copies that predate the addition of the five new plates by Piranesi's son Francesco (see BAL Early printed books, no. 2566, Notes). The vignette originally used on the title-page of the 1753 edition is reprinted here on the same leaf as the title-plate. It is now numbered 'Tav. XVIII' top right, dating from its use in the Rovine del Castello dell'Acqua Giulia, 1761 (q.v.). All the other plates are un-numbered. The 'Veduta dell'avanzo del Castello, che prendendo una porzione dell'Aqua Giulia ...', which was also issued in the Vedute di Roma series, is present here in Hind's third state (Hind 34 iii/vi).
Copy Notes With pl. [2] (the 'Veduta dell' avanzo del Castello ...') numbered by hand in ink '12'; and pl. [3], [6], and [10-14] with similar MS. numbering.
Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spine, red spine label gilt-lettered 'Piranesi / Opere / Varie'. Part of a 12-volume set re-bound by Hood and McCullock, to whom Soane paid £24 on 3 July 1826. (Archive 16/12/38).
