The title is taken from the etched dedication to Gustav III of Sweden, which is signed 'Francesco Piranesi inventó ed incise 1783.' The letterpress dedication is signed at the end by Francesco Piranesi and dated 'Roma il primo Gennajo 1783'.

Copy Notes Copy 1: Bound [2] with Francesco Piranesi's Monumenti degli Scipioni, 1786 (q.v.).
Copy 2: Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper John Soane / 1819 / 12 frs. This copy was probably bought by Soane during his visit to Paris in August and September 1819.

Binding Copy 1: C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spine, red spine label gilt-lettered 'Piranesi / Monumento / Degli / Scipioni', black spine-label gilt-lettered 'Teatro/ di/ Ercolano'. Part of a 12-volume set re-bound by Hood and McCullock, to whom Soane paid £24 on 3 July 1826. (Archive 16/12/38).
Copy 2: C19th half green calf, Italian(?) paste-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine, red morocco spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Teatro / Di / Ercolan'.
