PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista ( 1720--1778)
Antichità d'Albano e di Castel Gandolfo descritte ed incise da Giovambatista Piranesi
Roma:, [G.B. Piranesi],, 1764.
[4], 26 p., etch. t.-pl., etch. dedic., XXVII etch. pl. (1 fold.) : illus. (etch.) ; 54.5 cm (1°)

Piranesi dedicated this work to Pope Clement XIII, whose summer residence was at Castel Gandolfo on Mount Albano. The Pope had called on the artist when the latter was working at the site in 1758 or 1759 and offered to sponsor publication of a wider survey of the antiquities of the area (see Hind, Piranesi, pp. 85-6; BAL Early printed books, no. 2547). The title Antichità d'Albano e di Castel Gandolfo, taken from the etched title-plate of this work, seems to have been regarded by Piranesi as in some sense a general title that encompassed not only this work but also his two earlier, more specialised publications on the tunnel and grottoes of Lago Albano, viz. the Descrizione e disegno dell'emissario del Lago Albano [1762] (q.v.) and Di due spelonche ornate dagli antichi alla riva del Lago Albano [1762] (q.v.). As a result, copies of the Antichità and these two earlier works were often, as in the Soane example, bound together. Plate XXVI and a small un-numbered plate showing the section of a hypocaust (unsigned and possibly not by Piranesi) are printed together on one leaf. The final plate XXVII, a fine double-page veduta of an embanked section of the Via Appia signed 'Cavalier Piranesi F.' , must have been added to the work sometime after Clement XIII conferred this title on the artist in October 1766; it is present in some copies in an un-numbered state (cf. BAL 2547, copy 1).

Copy Notes Bound (1) with Piranesi's Descrizione e disegno dell' emissario del Lago Albano, [1762] and Di due spelonche ornate dagli antichi alla riva del Lago Albano [1762].
