Piranesi, Francesco (1758--1810)
Roma:, presso l'autore,, [1780]-90.
2 parts ; 54.5 cm. (1°)
Pt 1: [4], 24, [2], 10 p., etch. t.-pl., XIII, VIII pl.
Pt 2: [4] p., [30] pl. (1 fold.)
The etched dedication to Pope Pius VI names the work as 'Sciographia quatuor templorum veterum ...', and is dated 1780. Plate II is also dated 1780 as is the imprimatur on p. 10 of the second section devoted to the 'Tempio dell'Onore e della Virtù'. The imprint of Giovanni Salomoni appears below the imprimatur. The Soane copy is presumably a later issue than the BAL copy (BAL Early printed books, no. 2546) in which the eight plates in the second sequence are un-numbered. The Seconda parte de' tempj antichi, promised in a note on p. 10 of the second section, was not published until 1790.
The letterpress title-page of part 2 reads: 'Seconda Parte De' Tempj Antichi Che Contiene Il Celebre Panteon Publicato Dal Cavaliere Francesco Piranesi Architetto Romano ... In Roma A di 1. Agosto 1790.' with an etched vignette of the porphyry tomb of Agrippa. The plates of this part are numbered in roman numerals except for the last which is numbered 'Tav. 29', a 'Veduta' of the exterior which is un-numbered, and a view of the interior [= pl. XIII]. A copy in Queen's College, Oxford, which is the only other copy of the Seconda parte we have located in Britain, lacks the same five plates as the present copy.
Copy Notes Part 2 imperfect; wanting the un-numbered 'Veduta del Pantheon d'Agrippa' and pl. I, VII--IX and 29.
Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spine, red spine-label gilt-lettered 'Franc. / Piranesi / Tempii / Antichi'. Part of a 12-volume set re-bound by Hood and McCullock, to whom Soane paid £24 on 3 July 1826. (Archive 16/12/38).
Reference Number 6412
Additional Names Hood & McCullock; Tivoli, Italy
