Originally published in 1775 or 6, this is the earliest of three related works on the columns of ancient Rome published towards the end of Piranesi's life. The other two series provide a similar composite images of the Column of Marcus Aurelius (Colonna Antonina, [1776 or 7] - see Hind, p. 87) and a full record of the remains of the Colonna eretta in memoria dell'apoteosi di Antonino Pio, e Faustina sua moglie ... sul la Piazza di Monte Citerio, [1778 or 9] (q.v.), which had been damaged beyond repair by a fire in 1764. Later states of the Colonna Antonina plates are numbered XXII and XXIII in continuation of the Trajan's Column series - see Hind, p. 87. Plates XX and XXI were added to the original 19 plates in copies such as this issued by Francesco Piranesi sometime between the mid-1780s and his departure for Paris in 1798. Copy Notes Bound (1) with Colonna eretta in memoria dell'Apoteosi di Antonino Pio, [1779--1780] (q.v.). The Soane copy has an extraneous equestrian portrait of Clement XIV (to whom the work is dedicated), engraved in 1770 by Domenico Cunego from a drawing by Giovanni Domenico Porta.

Binding C19th half diced-calf, gilt roll-tooled borders, marbled-paper boards, marbled edges, gilt-tooled spine, gilt-lettered Colonna/ Traiano/ Pesto/ Adriana/ Pompei, &c.'. Bound uniformly with Vedute di Roma [1747--1787] (q.v.) and Vasi, candelabri, cippi ..., 1778--91 (q.v.).
