BARTOLI, Pietro Santi (1635--1700)
[Columna Antoniana. 1704]
engr. t.-pl., engr. dedic., 77 pl. ; 34.4 x 47.5 cm. (obl. 2°)
Second edition; the first is undated c. 1672 and bears the title Columna Antoniniana Marci Aurelii Antonini Augusti rebus gestis insignis .... Copies are found with or without three plates by Francesco Faraone Aquila, numbered I--III, of the base of the Columna Antonini Pii. These were probably added to copies of an intermediate issue prior to the Stylobates Columnae Antoninae title-leaf dated 1708 (q.v.). This was used both for a separate issue of the three Aquila plates, and apparently as a title-plate for a reissue of the whole work as in the British Library copy, shelfmark 1707.a.6. The Soane copy of the present work, in a later binding, has the three Aquila plates bound at the end with the 1708 Stylobates title-plate, but it is not clear whether it was issued thus. They are here treated as separate works. BAL, Early printed books, no. 213.
Copy Notes Bound first with Stylobates Colvmnae Antoninae, 1708 (q.v.) and Colonna Traiana, [1673] (q.v.). Bought from Thomas Boone for £2 10s. on 16 June 1817. (Archives 16/12/62). Inscribed in pencil on front pastedown Collumns [brace] Antonine 77 plates/ Stylobates 3 plates/ Trajan 119 plates/ [total] 196 plates/ / £2=s12=d16, with dates of publication (giving that for Colonna Traiana as 1708) added by A.T. Bolton.
Binding Later C18th sprinkled calf, triple gilt-ruled borders, gilt-tooled spine, red spine-label, gilt-lettered 'Colonne/ Di/ Roma'. The endleaves watermarked 'D & C BLAUW'.
Reference Number 6428
Additional Names ROSSI, Domenico de' (fl. 1693--1721); Bellori, Giovanni Pietro (1613--1696); Marcus Aurelius, Emperor of Rome (121--180)
