PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista ( 1720--1778)
Trofei di Ottaviano Avgvsto innalzati per la vittoria ad Actium e conqvista dell' Egitto con varj altri ornamenti antichi disegnati ed incisi dal Cavalier Gio · Bat[tis]ta · Piranesi
[Rome]:, [G.B. Piranesi],, [c. 1770-75].
[9] etch. pl. (5 double-page) ; 53.5 cm. (2°)

Issued as part of a copy of the Opere varie (q.v.) probaby dating from the early 1770s. The title is taken from the undated title-plate usually associated with the expanded posthumous edition issued by Piranesi's son Francesco around 1780 (q.v.), but evidently also used sometime from January 1767 onwards (see BAL Early printed books, no. 2566, Notes). However neither this title-plate nor the original 1753 letterpress title-page is present in this copy. This suggests that it may represent an intermediate issue dating from after the suppression (or exhaustion) of the earlier title-page but before the introduction of the title-plate. Alternatively of course either the title-page or the title-plate may simply be missing.

Copy Notes Possibly wanting either the 1753 letterpress title-page or the post-January 1767 title-plate. With two extraneous, un-numbered double-page plates inserted at the end, deriving from Piranesi's Vasi, candelabri, cippi, ... [etc.], 1778 (q.v.). They both depict an antique candelabrum in the possession of 'Tommaso Jenkins, Pittore Inglese', one showing ing it in elevation, the other in perspective (the latter apparently after some modification to its two lower tiers had take place - cf. Focillon 648 & 649; Ficacci 780 & 781). Both plates are signed 'Cavalier Piranesi del. e inc.' and dedicated to Giambattista Rezzonico, one of Piranesi's most important patrons.

Binding C19th half sheep, marbled paper boards, red morocco spine-label lettered in gilt 'Piranesi / Opera / Varie'.

Reference Number 6450
