PIRANESI, Giovanni Battista ( 1720--1778)
[Carceri. 3rd ed.]
Carceri d' invenzione di G. Battista Piranesi archit. Vene
[Roma]:, [F. Piranesi],, [c. 1795].
XVI double-page etch. pl. ; 54.5 cm. (1°)
This copy matches Andrew Robison's description of the posthumous third edition, in that it has four (of the seven) plates he notes as susceptible to 'large areas of lightly printed lines ... apparently caused by faulty cleaning of the plates before storage and re-use' (viz. R 29. 32, 36 & 37). There are however no discernible watermarks in this copy - cf. Andrew Robison, Piranesi early architectural fantasies: a catalogue raisonné of the etchings (Washington D.C.: National Gallery of Art), 1986, p. 140.
Copy Notes Bound as the fourth component in a copy of Piranesi's Opere varie issued in the mid 1790s (q.v.).
Binding C19th calf, gilt-ruled borders, gilt-ruled spine, red spine-label gilt-lettered 'Piranesi / Opere / Varie'. Part of a 12-volume set re-bound by Hood and McCullock, to whom Soane paid £24 on 3 July 1826. (Archive 16/12/38).
Reference Number 6465
Additional Names Hood & McCullock
