MALTON, Thomas, the younger (1748--1804)
Malton's Oxford, ...
London: printed by T. Bensley, for T. Malton, 1802--1804.
[24] aquat. pl. ; 39.5 cm. (2º)

Title and imprint from printed medallion on wrappers to each number, preceded by 'No. 1. (-4.)'. Aquatint plates printed in sepia. According to the prospectus issued in 1801 (q.v.) this work was to be 'of the same Size as the Tour through London, Boydell's Shakespeare, and other recent Publications', and was intended to appear in eight half-yearly numbers, each containing six views. The first four numbers appeared as promised in March and August 1802, April 1803, and January 1804, in wrappers with the title Malton's Oxford, but the publication was never completed owing to the author's death in March 1804. The fourth part was added in 1804 (?); a 'fifth' part was likewise added to another issue published by White & Co. and R. Smith in 1810.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the fourth number (plates [19]--[24]). The title medallions from the printed wrappers of the first three numbers are laid down on a binder's interleaf. Bound (3) with the first two livraisons of T.C. Bruun Neergard's Voyage pittoresque du nord de l'Italie, 1812 (q.v.), and the prospectus, 1801 (q.v.), laid down on a binder's interleaf.

Binding C19th half calf, blind-tooled borders, gilt double-rule spine, morocco-grain cloth boards.
